POLICY ON USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BY AUTHORS

ISSN: 2982-2181 (Online)

Health Sciences Australia follows the principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Accordingly, we adhere to the guidelines on ethics and authorship recommended by these globally recognized organizations. This policy outlines the rules for using artificial intelligence (AI), including chatbots, in the production of submitted work.

  1. Disclosure of AI Use: At the time of submission, authors must disclose whether they used AI-assisted technologies (such as Large Language Models [LLMs], chatbots, or image creators) in the creation of their manuscript. This disclosure should be made in both the cover letter and the submitted work.

  1. Attribution and Responsibility: Authors are responsible for any material submitted that includes the use of AI-assisted technologies. Chatbots (such as ChatGPT) should not be listed as authors, as they cannot be held accountable for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the work—qualities that are essential for authorship.

  1. Human Oversight: Authors must carefully review and edit any AI-generated content, as such technologies may produce authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Authors must assert the absence of plagiarism in their manuscript, including any text or images produced by AI. Additionally, proper attribution of all quoted material, including full citations, must be ensured.

  1. ICMJE Recommendations: According to the updated ICMJE Recommendations (January 2024), all work conducted with the assistance of artificial intelligence technology must be acknowledged, particularly in Sections II.A.3 and 4, and IV.A.3.d. Furthermore, the use of AI in the review process is addressed in Sections II.C.2.a and II.C.3.

By following these guidelines, Health Sciences Australia aims to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity and ethical publication practices in the face of evolving technologies.
